Am I right here?

Who can come to counselling?

All students at Hildesheim universities (university, HAWK) can contact us free of charge and without a medical referral. We offer individual counselling and crisis intervention, as well as counselling for couples after consultation. If you are worried about another student, you can also contact us.

Everyone is welcome at the counselling centre. You will find a safe space for your concerns here.

With what issues or concerns can I come?

Do you feel that counselling could help you? Then that is reason enough to contact us. Counselling is not about how "big" your problem is. On the contrary, it often makes more sense to seek support early on, before things get very bad for you. You can find some examples of counselling topics here.

And what if I am worried about another person?

In this case, we will also advise you. During counselling, we can discuss with you how you can support the person in question.

Maybe the person is also willing to engage in a joint session, in which case you can also come together.

What can I expect?

How long does a session last and how often can I come?

A counselling session lasts 50 to 60 minutes. You can have up to 6 counselling sessions within 12 months. During short counselling, a session lasts about 30 minutes.

What can I expect for my first individual counselling session?

The counsellor will meet you at the door and accompany you to the counselling room. You will now have 50 - 60 minutes to describe your current situation and your concerns. In addition, some organisational things are clarified, such as information on data protection and confidentiality.

What are short counselling sessions and how can I use them?

For the short counselling sessions, you will be given a short-term appointment (in person, online or by telephone). This can be helpful for acute stress or questions about finding a therapy place. Contact us in advance by phone or email to make an appointment.

Who are the counsellors?

In the counselling centre, a multi-professional team is at your side. All of them have completed therapeutic training.

What shoud I know?

How do I get an appointment for counselling?

To get an appointment, please contact the Service Center via phone or e-mail. To ensure easy communication, please email us your contact details (e-mail address and phone number).

How can I reschedule/cancel a counselling appointment?

Please contact the ServiceCenter as early as possible by phone or email. Then we can pass your appointment on to another person seeking help.

Does the counselling cost anything?

You contribute to the financing of the counselling centre through your Studierendenwerks-fee. There are no further costs for you.

How do I find the counselling centre?

You will find us at Hindenburgplatz 16 A. Go through the underpass to the back of the building, where you will find entrance 16 A on the left. The Service Centre is on the first floor on the left behind the glass door. We will welcome you there.

What about confidentiality?

The entire team of the PBS is, of course, subject to professional secrecy. This means:

  • When you visit the counselling centre, the fact that you do so is treated confidentially.
  • Information about you and the contents of the counselling will not be passed on to other people or institutions, such as health insurance companies - unless you yourself wish this and release the staff member from the duty of confidentiality in writing.
Can I also get an anonymous counselling?

Yes, this is possible via chat, telephone or video. Unfortunately, anonymous on-site counselling is no longer possible since the pandemic.

Does the counselling have an influence on later civil service employment ("Verbeamtung")?

Students who aspire to a career as a civil servant ("Beamtenlaufbahn") often fear that they will not be appointed as a civil servant after taking advantage of counselling. We would like to allay this fear. The mere fact that you have received counselling from us is no reason to deny you a civil service position. Moreover, we are an independent counselling centre and are bound by professional secrecy.

What if the counselling is not enough?

Can I get psychotherapy at the counselling centre?

No, we don't offer psychotherapy. However, we can support you in your search and accompany you on the way to therapy.

How do I find a therapy spot?

If you are looking for psychotherapy, the PBS cannot recommend or refer therapists to you. However, we can support you in your search - you can find a guide to finding a therapy place here.

You can find an overview of psychotherapists in your area at:

You can find more information about psychotherapy here:

Of course, you can also use a counselling session to discuss with us which counselling or therapy services are suitable for you.

Who can I contact in emergencies?
